These awesome foods work best when they are part of a healthy and balanced diet, rather than eating one or two SuperFoods in the hope that it’ll counteract a bad diet. Of course, ‘a little bit of what you fancy’ is fine, but don’t forget to match that cheesy pizza with some of our superfood suggestions.

A Super Diet full of SuperFoods

As well as Super Foods, nutritionists like to talk about Super Diets where the emphasis is on a healthy, balanced diet, rich in fruit, vegetables and wholegrain foods.

So whilst these awesome foods contain more nutrients and health benefits than your average (un-super) foods, the diet as a whole plays the most important role in our health.

Our guide above contains some of the rarer Super Foods available to buy in supermarkets and shops – so we’ve picked some of the more obscure foods and explained what they are and how to incorporate them into your Super Diet!

All about the Algae – Try Spirulina and Chlorella

Chlorella and Spirulina are both freshwater algae, which luckily you can buy in powder form. Thanks to their incredible nutrient value, they can offer a wide range of health benefits when incorporated to your daily diet.

Each algae has different health benefits. Have a look and see what sounds good for you.

Chlorella

Chlorella powder is one of the most nutrient dense foods available. It’s a natural supplement which can help to boost energy and support fat loss. Let’s take a closer look at the benefits of this algae.

  • Proven to support your immune system which can benefit people who are prone to catching common colds.
  • Chlorella is reported to even make you look younger, which is down to the fact it can reduce oxidative stress which is known to be caused by pollution, physical stress and even a poor diet.
  • Adding Chlorella to food can help with weight loss. This algae is reported to regulate hormones and help with metabolism issues, all of which can be a source of weight issues.
  • Toxins can be problem for some people and Chlorella can help flush these toxins out as part of a balanced diet.  
  • Chlorella is known to promote the healing of tissues, perfect for recovery after a heavy gym session.

Top SuperFood Tip: Chlorella powder is bright green and has a slightly bitter taste. If you’re looking to pair this with your porridge, we recommend adding a squeeze of natural sweetener such as agave or honey to counteract this.

Spirulina

  • Spirulina contains huge amount of protein and antioxidants
  • Spirulina contains lots of  good fats that are essential for a healthy brain
  • The ideal portion of spirulina is between 4-5 grams, which is about a teaspoon

Super Diet Tip: Stir a spoonful of your chosen algae powder into a pot of MOMA Porridge – it might look a bit green but you’ll reap all of the nutrient benefits.  We recommend adding banana in with your Spirulina porridge, this means you can adjust the sweetness and counteract some of the slight bitterness Spirulina has.

Try Acai

There are numerous healthy berries that would be a great addition to your diet. The acai berry is one of the healthiest berries you will ever find. It has been touted as a superfood  because it is packed with antioxidants, amino acids, fibre, essential fatty acids, vitamins and minerals making it a near perfect energising fruit.

Did you know: The little Acai berry has more than double the amount of antioxidants as blueberries and nearly ten times as many as grapes. Choosing freeze dried acai berries over fresh acai means that these properties are preserved nicely.  

This small and mighty berry is an inch-long and a reddish-purple colour and the taste is often described as a fruity red wine flavour with chocolate overtones. Wine and Chocolate, what a way to start your day!

Super Diet Tip: Prepare a fruity berry mix containing a handful of acai berries at the weekend and keep it in a tub in the fridge, ready to top porridge or bircher muesli throughout the week.

Look into Lucuma

Whilst this super food sounds like a magic spell, this fruit was beloved by the Incas. Forget chocolate or strawberry, Lucuma is the most popular ice cream flavour in Peru!

Lucuma is a super nutritious Peruvian fruit that is packed with, iron, zinc, vitamin B3, calcium, and protein. Its maple-like taste makes it sweet and perfect for your morning porridge as a natural sweetener.

The fruit has a sweet taste enhancing whatever food you stir it into, without influencing or impairing the overall taste of the recipe making it a great addition to a pot of MOMA porridge or a smoothie.
